A History of the Frank B. Whiting Home
Originally built in 1885 by and for Daniel Barnes, this Queen Anne style home features an extravagant amount of living space, a feature typical of late 19th century architecture. Frank B. Whiting purchased the home in 1910, and subseqeuntly added tennis courts to the property. Later, a garage was added in order to supplement the need for an automobile. Whiting used this building as his primary place of residence, as well as his active office for the George Whiting Paper Company, the company that he served as VP for until 1932, when he assumed the presidency of his company. His lifestyle became even more lavish when he married Broadway actress Merle Stevens in 1940, which coincided with the construction of a new back porch. Frank Whiting died in 1952, leaving behind a legacy of business and philanthropy. To this day, he is still regarded as one of the major figures behind Neenah's economic transformation.
